Baseball Falls to Mercy, 3-2
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2011) - C.W. Post pitchers
Glen Hudson (Sayville, N.Y.) and
Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.) combined to hold Mercy College to just three hits, but for the second day in a row, the Mavericks took advantage of a big fourth inning, as they scored three runs in the inning then held on to defeat the Pioneers 3-2 on Thursday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
Hudson went five innings and gave up only two hits and struck out five batters, but was hurt by four walks. Kapson threw well in his four-inning relief stint, allowing only one hit and walking two while striking out four.
Scoreless through three, Mercy led off the fourth with back to back singles, followed by a walk to load the bases. Anthony Simon sent a high fly ball into the sun and swirling winds in right field, and the Pioneer right fielder could not track the ball and make the catch, allowing two runs to score. A sacrifice fly by Mike Grassano added a third run in the inning and gave the Mavericks the 3-0 lead.
C.W. Post found some life in the eighth, sparked by
Rich Maccarone's (Glen Cove, N.Y.) leadoff doubled down the left field line. A groundout moved him to third, and he scored on
Nick Compito's (Jericho, N.Y.) single through the right side. A fielder's choice erased Compito but allowed
Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) to reach first, and with two outs,
Phil LoPrete (Bellerose, N.Y.) launched a bomb to deep right field, allowing McKay to scamper home with the Pioneers' second run of the game.
However, despite putting two runners on with only one out in the ninth, C.W. Post was unable to push across the equalizer and fell to Mercy by a 3-2 final.
The Pioneers remain in action with the Mavericks tomorrow, at Dobbs Ferry, in a 3 p.m. contest.
