Steady Offense Lifts Molloy Over Baseball, 12-6

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (April 26, 2011) – The Molloy College Lions used a five-run rally in the second inning to catapult themselves over C.W. Post, 12-6, Wednesday afternoon in an East Coast Conference baseball game at the Mitchel Athletic Complex.
Molloy improves its overall record to 26-16 and 18-6 in the ECC. The loss dips C.W. Post's record to 8-28 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
The Pioneers scored the game's first run in the second when freshman first baseman Phil Loprete (Bellrose, N.Y.) reached with a triple to right center and came around to score when sophomore third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to the shortstop.
The Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning with five runs, starting with a pair of RBI singles from Joseph Menendez and Joseph Kelly. Two more runs were scored on an infield throwing error while the fifth run of the inning was scored on a wild pitch.
Molloy added two more runs in the third, beginning with a solo home run from Ryan Akers and followed by an RBI double to left center from Menendez. The scoring continued in the fifth for Molloy with three more runs, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles.
The Pioneers scratched out four runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 10-5. Sophomore centerfielder Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied the first RBI with a single to left field. Junior designated hitter Nick Compito (Jericho, N.Y.) brought in the second run with an RBI walk. Sophomore catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) added to the total with a two RBI single to left field.
The Lions kept the pace up and score a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings with RBI singles from Greg Walsh and Akers.
The Pioneers added one more run in the top of the eight when freshman shortstop Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) drove in Loprete with a groundout to second.
Akers and Menendez each tallied three hits and drove in a pair of runs with two runs scored.
Chuck Fontana won his eighth game after allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts for the Lions.
Loprete was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Pioneers. Chenicek was 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman right fielder #P.J. Jennings# (Morris Plains, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
C.W. Post returns to action on Wednesday for an ECC make-up game against Dowling.
