Baseball Nips Dowling in 10 Innings, 6-5

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2011) – Freshman shortstop
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) singled in
Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) with the winning run in the tenth inning as the Pioneers pulled off the extra-inning victory following a back and forth contest on Wednesday afternoon in East Coast Conference baseball action.
C.W. Post now stands at 9-28 overall and 7-12 overall , while Dowling bumps to 16-21 overall and 12-12 in ECC play.
Dowling touched starter
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) for two runs in the third inning, as a fielder's choice and an error by the Pioneer infield gave the Golden Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Erik Cabrera led off the fifth with a triple and scored on Brian Ferguson's RBI double. Two batters later, Joe Candela tripled to right center to score Ferguson and push the Dowling lead to 4-0.
C.W. Post rallied for three runs in the sixth, as Tolan led off with a single to right center and
Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) doubled to left center.
Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) grounded out to drive in one run, followed by an RBI single to center by
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) that scored Simone. McKay's two-out triple drove in Corona for the Pioneers' third run.
The Pioneers took the lead in the seventh, as #P.J. Jennings# (Morris Plains, N.J.) led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. Tolan walked to put runners on first and second, and a passed ball advanced both runners a base. Simone singled to center to drive in both runners and give C.W. Post a 5-4 lead.
But Dowling answered right back in the bottom of the inning, as Chenicek hit Ferguson to lead off in the inning.
Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) came on in relief, but misplayed Andrew Abreu's sacrifice bunt, allowing Ferguson to score and knot the score at 5-5.
But Hudson rebounded to pitch a scoreless 2.1 innings before giving way to senior hurler
Marshall Kapson (Commack,N.Y.) in the ninth. Kapson allowed only one hit in two thirds of the ninth and following Tolan's RBI single in the top of the tenth, got three outs in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.
McKay went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a runs scored, and Toaln went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI to lead the way for C.W. Post at the plate. Simone chipped in with a 2-for-6 effort with an RBI and a run scored.
The Pioneers continue ECC play as they return to their five-game series against Molloy on Friday at Mitchell Field at 3 p.m.
