Nick Compito (Jericho, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) each had two hits and two RBI, as the Pioneers kept a steady dose of offensive pressure on the Molloy Lions and came away with a 10-4 victory on Friday afternoon at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
C.W. Post improves to 10-28, 8-12 in ECC play, while Molloy moves to 26-16 overall and 18-7 in conference action.
The Pioneers bats, led by Compito and Corona, backed a strong starting effort by
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.), who went seven innings and scattered eight hits while striking out two and allowing three runs. Freshman
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) threw two strong innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run while striking out one.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead right away as
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) stroked a one out single, and came home on Corona's RBI single to center field.
The visitors tacked on three more runs in the second, as Ryan Slaone (Westbury, N.Y.) and #P.J. Jennings# (Morris Plains, N.J.) smoked back-to-back doubles to start the innings. Maccarone followed with a triple to plate Jennings, then scored on Compito's ground ball that was misplayed by Molloy's shortstop for a 4-0 lead.
Molloy scored a run in the second on a Kris Kelly RBI, but C.W. Post answered with a five-run fourth, capped by a two-run double to left by Compito and RBIs from Corona and
Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.).
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the fifth, and Molloy got another run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by Carlos Guzman, and the score moved to 10-2.
Molloy scored solo runs in the sixth and ninth, but the Pioneer lead was too much for the Lions as C.W. Post closed out the victory.
Maccarone also had two hits and scored three runs in the onslaught, and Jennings went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Matthew Metz was the losing pitcher with a final line of four innings pitched, allowing nine runs on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
C.W. Post and Molloy continue their series tomorrow with a 12 noon doubleheader at C.W. Post.
