Baseball Drops Two to Bridgeport, 10-3 and 5-3
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 3, 2011) - The University of Bridgeport baseball team swept a doubleheader from the C.W. Post baseball team for the second time in two days as C.W. Post fell 10-3 and 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
In the first game of the day, the teams put up zeros through the first three innings. But Bridgeport exploded for a four-run fourth inning, as the Purple Knights got a two-run single from Ryan Barba, a sac fly by Matt Ranaudao, and a walk to Gaetano Giunta that forced in a run.
Another four runs in the fifth inning –three coming on a three-run bomb over the right field fence by Ranaudo – put C.W. Post down by 8-0.
C.W. Post pushed across two runs in the fifth on an RBI groundout by junior designated hitter
Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) and a Bridgeport error.
Another run in the seventh came on a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.), but Bridgeport answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to close out the game by a 10-3 final score.
Matt Simone (West Babylon, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the game. Sophomore
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) was the losing pitcher with 4.0 innings pitched, giving up four runs (one earned).
Game two started off with runs in the first inning for both teams, as Bridgeport plated a run on Eric Schlitter's fielder's choice RBI in the top of the inning. But C.W. Post responded in the bottom half of the inning as Simone and Maccarone hit back to back singles to lead off the inning. A
Ryan Sloane (Westbury, N.Y.) single plated two runs and gave the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.
Bridgeport tied up the game in the third inning on a Matt Ranaudo single to center field that scored Peter Barrows from third.
Bridgeport pushed across two runs in the sixth to break the tie on a Barrows RBI double and a passed ball that scored the runner from third.
Another insurance run in the seventh made the score 5-2 in favor of the Purple Knights, and despite a comeback effort by the Pioneers in the seventh, C.W. Post only pushed across one run and dropped the game by a 5-3 final.
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the loss, going 5.2 innings and scattering seven hits, giving up four runs (two earned) while fanning nine.
James Stone pitched 1.1 inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit and one walk.
Sloane was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
