Baseball Earns Split With Molloy

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 30, 2011) – C.W. Post baseball had a solid day at the plate as the Pioneers split a doubleheader with the Lions of Molloy College, losing game one 5-4 but rebounding to take the nightcap by a 7-3 score in East Coast Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post is now 11-29 overall and 9-13 in ECC play, while Molloy stands at 27-17, 19-8 in conference play.
In the first game, Molloy took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, only to see the Pioneers keep the game close with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, as
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Phil LoPrete (Bellerose, N.Y.) drove in runs for the hosts.
Molloy increased its lead with a solo run in the fourth, but the Pioneers matched it in the bottom of the inning as Chenicek drove in another run, this time on a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Lions scored again in the fifth on a bases-loaded passed ball, but saw C.W. Post once again match them in the fifth as
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) roped an RBI single to left field.
Down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers got the tying run aboard and over to third base with one out, but were unable to push the run across to tie up the game.
Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, throwing four innings and scattering eight hits, giving up four runs.
Ryan O'Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) threw three solid innings of relief, allowing only one hit and one unearned run.
In the second game, the Pioneers took advantage of some shaky defense by Molloy, as a dropped third strike and throwing error, followed by a throwing error on an infield hit allowed the first two runners to reach base.
Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Corona was hit by a pitch to score the first run, followed by a walk to
#Casey McKay# (North Massapequa, N.Y.) that plated another. Compito scored on a passed ball for the third and final run of the inning.
Molloy scored an unearned run in the second on an infield error, but C.W. Post scored one of their own in the bottom of the inning on Corona's single to left to keep the hosts ahead by three runs, 4-1.
Molloy stayed close with another run in the third on a Ryan Akers RBI single, but the Pioneers put three runs on the board in the foruth, as Corona had another RBI single, followed by a McKay fielder's choice RBI and a Chenicek sacrifice fly RBI, pushing the C.W. Post advantage to 7-2.
Molloy scored one in the sixth, as Kris Kelly smacked an RBI double, but
Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) came on in the seventh and closed out the game, helping starter
Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.) earn the victory, as he threw six inning and scattered six hits, giving up three runs (only one earned), issuing two walks and striking out eight.
Compito, Corona and
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) each had two hits, as Maccarone scored three teams and Compito twice, and Corona drove in three runs to lead the Pioneer offense.
C.W. Post closes out the series with Molloy tomorrow at home with a 1 p.m. contest.
