Baseball Puts Up Two Big Innings to Help Defeat Queens, 15-6

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 6, 2011) – The C.W. Post baseball team picked up a solid conference victory on Wednesday against Queens, 15-6. Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) led the way, notching three RBIs on four hits. #Ryan O'Kelly# (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) picked up his first win on the year after coming on in relief to pitch 4.1 innings and striking out four.
After taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the third inning, the Pioneers tacked on six more runs during the inning to increase the lead to nine. Corona scored from third on a bases loaded strikeout and an error on the throw out, allowing all runners to be safe. Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) was then hit by a pitch was the bases loaded to drive in a run. A Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) RBI single, a bases loaded wild pitch, a Nick Compito (Jericho, N.Y.) RBI single, and a Corona RBI single accounted for the rest of the runs scored in the inning.
Queens put one run on the board during the top of the fourth before the Pioneers added five more runs in the bottom half to make the score 14-1. Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) tripled in a run to start the scoring, and then was later driven in on a ground out. Corona also added another RBI single to highlight the inning.
The Knights put up four runs ruing the fifth and one more run in the ninth, however could not overcome the deficit. Starting pitcher Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched 4.2 innings to begin the game for the Pioneers, striking out five and allowing five runs on only two hits.
During the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitter Joe Mare (Whitestone, N.Y.) picked up his first base hit since the 2007 season after an improbable comeback from an injury suffered during 2008 with a single through the left side.
C.W. Post improves to 4-23, including 3-9 in conference play. Queens drops to 4-21 overall with a 2-8 conference record.
These two teams will go at it once again next time out, with a scheduled 3 p.m. start time for Friday, April 8, with the Pioneers traveling to Queens.
