St. Thomas Aquinas Sweeps Baseball, 3-2 and 6-1

 FISHKILL, N.Y. (May 7, 2011) – The C.W. Post baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader as St. Thomas Aquinas used strong starting pitching efforts to defeat the Pioneers 3-2 and 6-1 in East Coast Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon. 

C.W. Post slips to 11-33 overall and 9-17 in conference play, while STAC improves to 24-22-1 and 14-14 in conference play. 

St. Thomas Aquinas took a 2-0 lead in the third courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.  But the Pioneers tied the game in the sixth with a two-run inning of their own, as sophomore catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) roped a two-run double .

But STAC took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Mike Walraven singled with runners on second and third to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.

Starter Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.) went 5.1 innings in the no-decision, scattering six hits and allowing three runs.  Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) took the loss. 

Junior designated hitter Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) and sophomore second baseman Casey McKay (North Masssapequa, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Pioneers in the loss.   

In game two, the Pioneers managed just four hits, although they did take a 1-0 lead in the fifth, only to see STAC score two in the bottom of the inning and take a 2-1 lead.  The Spartans tacked on four more runs in the sixth to make the deficit 6-1 for the Pioneers.

Junior James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) took the loss, throwing five innings and giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.  Eric Cooper earned the complete game victory for the Spartans scattering four hits and allowing only one run. 

C.W. Post and St. Thomas Aquinas close out the series tomorrow with a home doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
