BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 7, 2011) –
Kelly Cefalu made her only goal of the day an important one, as she tallied the game-winner for Dowling College with 2:19 remaining in the second overtime period, giving the Golden Lions the sudden death, 15-14 victory over the C.W. Post women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, C.W. Post honored its four seniors , Jackie Coyne (Levittown, N.Y.), Taryn Crimi (West Islip, N.Y.), Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) and Sam Powers (Holbrook, N.Y.) for their dedication and commitment to the program over the past four seasons.
C.W. Post falls to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the ECC, while Dowling sits at 14-2, 7-0 ECC.
The game was a furious back-and –forth affair from the start, as Cassandra Cronin started the day's scoring with a tally at 29:10, only to be answered just four seconds later by an unassisted score by Fucich. The teams traded goals twice to pull to a 3-3 tie, before Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) put the Pioneers on top, 4-3. But the lead was short lived as Dowling's Nicolle Moran scored on back-to-back free position shots to give DC the lead, 5-4, with 10:28 remaining in the first half.
Spagnoletta controlled the action over the next four minutes of play as she scored three straight and gave the Pioneers a 7-5 advantage, but Dowling quickly answered with two goals to close the game, and Fucich's tally at 1:55 in the first gave the Pioneers an 8-7 lead heading into halftime.
Brooke Witkowski tied the game back up less than two minutes into the start of the second half, but sophomore attacker Abbie Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) found the back of the cage to put the Pioneers back on top at the 27 minute mark. A Dowling score was answered by another Fucich goal, and junior midfielder Brie-Claire Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) gave C.W. Post a two-goal edge with her score at 25:11. Ross gave the Pioneers a 12-9 lead at 22:46, but Briana Falese and Cassandra Cronin ripped home goals with just over 20 minutes to play to pull to within a goal, 12-11.
Ross scored again at 18:17 and the Pioneer lead was back to two goals, but Dowling quickly answered as Moran scored at 15:35. But the scoring flurry came to an abrupt halt as both teams played a possession game all the way up until 2:51 remaining in regulation, almost 13 minutes of scoreless play. But Moran's lone tally in the last 15 minutes of play was the difference maker as it forced a 13-13 tie that sent the game into overtime.
C.W. Post scored the icebreaker in the first OT as Ross ripped one in with 1:04 left in the period. But Dowling fought back and Moran put one in the back of the cage with just 34 seconds remaining in the second OT, forcing a 14-14 tie and a third OT period, this time sudden death. Just 41 seconds ticked off the clock in the third period before Cefalu's heroics gave the Golden Lions the victory.
The Pioneers were led offensively by Spagnoletta and Ross with four goals apiece, while Fucich chipped in with two. Freshman Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored two goals and added three assists, while Spagnoletta also added two helpers and Fucich tallied one.
Dowling was led by Moran's game-high seven goals, while Cronin scored three and added two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) had a strong game, making 15 saves in the net. C.W. Post was 18-19 in clear attempts and 2-4 in free position shots, while Dowling, who held a 43-32 shot advantage and an 18-15 draw control edge, was 6-13 from free position.
