Baseball Closes Out 2011 With Doubleheader Sweep of Mercy, 5-1 and 6-4
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 9, 2011) – The C.W. Post baseball ended the 2011 campaign on a high note, sweeping a doubleheader from conference foe Mercy College this afternoon, 5-1 and 6-4. C.W. Post ends the season 12-18 in conference play, 14-34 overall.
In the first of the two played at the baseball field this afternoon, the game remained scoreless until the Pioneers woke up the bats during the bottom half of the fourth inning. #P.J. Jennings# (Morris Plains, N.J.) got the Pioneers going with a bases loaded RBI single. Another run scored on a bases loaded walk and two more were driven off of a Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) single. C.W. Post tacked on one more run later on, ending the inning with five runs off of 4 hits.
Mercy was able to scratch together one run during the top of the sixth with a bases loaded walk. That was all the damage the Mavericks were able to do against the pitching duo of starter Mike Eckerle (Hewlett, N.Y.) and Marshall Kapson (Commack, N.Y.). Eckerle pitched the first five, striking out six and only allowing five hits. Kapson then pitched the final two innings, striking out one and only giving up that same number in the hit column.
After taking the first game, the Pioneers went into the second game and found themselves down early after the Mavericks put one run across in the top of the first. Designated hitter Matt Walsh drove in the lone run in the inning for Mercy with a RBI single.
The fight of the Pioneers allowed them to score three runs in the bottom of the first to quickly erase the deficit and take the lead. An error on a bunt single allowed Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) to score the first run of the game for the Pioneers, with a wild pitch and sacrifice fly accounting for the final two runs of the inning.
A Tolan RBI single in the fourth and a Phil Loprete (Bellerose, N.Y) two-RBI single in the fifth gave the Pioneers a 6-1 lead after five innings. Starting pitcher Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) went five, allowing only the first inning run.
The Mavericks fought back hard during the top half of the seventh, using four singles in the inning to score three runs. However, reliever Ryan O'Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) limited the damage to secure the victory for C.W. Post.
