Franklin Pierce Takes Last Three Sets to Earn Victory Over Volleyball, 3-1
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept 16, 2011) – After taking the first set to open up Friday night's match, the C.W. Post volleyball team was unable to hold off the Ravens of Franklin Pierce. Franklin Pierce took the non-conference by a score of three sets to one (25-13, 12-25, 22-25, 19-25). The Ravens reach the .500 mark with the win, improving to 4-4 while the Pioneers drop a game below .500 with an overall record of 4-5.
The first set belonged all to the Pioneers, as the team went up by as much as 10 with a 19-9 lead to help get things going. C.W. Post accumulated 13 kills to help take the match, while forcing seven Raven attacking errors.
Kaiulani Kaalekahi (Waimanalo, Hawaii) paced the offense with nine assists in the opening set.
Shayla Hixson (Honolulu, Hawaii) notched five kills during the second set, however, it was not enough to hold off the Ravens. Franklin Pierce was able to switch roles from the first set, forcing 15 attacking errors on the Pioneers. The squad only needed six kills during the set to help them earn the victory, led by Natasha Ray's four equalizers.
The third set was a closer battle for the two teams, with the Pioneers taking the early lead only to surrender it back to the Ravens later on. Michelle Marguette helped push the win with four service aces, three of which coming in a five play span at one point during the set.
More Pioneers errors in the fourth set to go along with 11 kills on the side of the Ravens helped Franklin Pierce take the match in four sets. Catie Swiderski tallied four kills in both the third and fourth sets, finishing up the game leader in the category with 11. Stephanie Svorinic accumulated for 30 of the Ravens 33 assists tonight to help spread out the offense.
On the defensive side, four Ravens reached double figure dig numbers to helped total 59 for the team.
For the Pioneers, Hixson led the attack with 10 kills in the four sets. Kaalekahi ended the night with 19 assists, with
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) coming up with 11 of her own.
Next up for the Pioneers is a Saturday tri-match tomorrow afternoon, Sept. 17, at New Haven. The first of the two games for C.W. Post will be against LeMoyne, followed by a meeting with the Chargers of New Haven.
