Volleyball Drops Competitive Five Set Match to Adelphi, 3-2
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2011) – The C.W. Post women's volleyball team lost a heartbreaking nonconference road match to former conference foe, Adelphi, 3-2 (24-26, 27-25, 25-20, 20-25, 17-19). Three of the sets went beyond the normal winning point, including the final fifth set.
The Pioneers drop to 7-8 now on the season, with the Panthers improving to 8-3 in the 2011 season.
C.W. Post took a 2-1 match lead after winning back to back sets in the second and third frames. In those three games,
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) was once again the vocal point of the offense with 10 kills. She was also the leader on the defensive side, tallying 15 digs and two solo blocks up to that point in the match.
The Panthers and Pioneer were all squared at 14 a piece before Adelphi went on a 7-1 run to help propel the team to a fourth set victory, pushing the match to a fifth and deciding set. Samantha Rico led the attack with four kills on the Adelphi side.
With the fifth match winning point set at 15 and a win by two basis, no team was looking to give up as the teams went back from nearly a tie at 12 till the end of the set. With the score knotted up at 17, Chelsea Overholt put down a kill and then was followed up by a Rico service ace to give Adelphi the set and match victory.
Overholt led the Panthers with 16 kills in the five sets played and Bianca Hernandez taking the team lead in digs with 22. As a group, Adelphi put together 12 service aces, 63 kills and 95 digs.
Namahoe ended her night with 18 kills and 25 digs to take top markings in both categories for C.W. Post.
Stephanie Schwarz (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) paced the offense with 46 assists.
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) and
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) also joined Namahoe in double figure kills numbers with 13 and 10 respectively.
The Pioneers return back to conference play on Thursday with a road match against rival NYIT. The match is set to get started in Old Westbury at 7 p.m.
