NYIT Edges Out Volleyball in Five Sets for 3-2 Conference Victory
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2011) – The NYIT Bears earned a third victory in ECC play tonight as the team just edged out C.W. Post by a final score of 3-2 (25-17, 12-25, 25-23, 19-25, 13-15). NYIT moves to 3-1 in the ECC with a 6-5 overall record, while the Pioneers fall to 7-9 overall and a 1-2 conference record.
C.W. Post used an 8-0 run to break a 12-12 tie during the first set to help capture the victory in the opening frame.
Jordan Schroer (Kailua, Hawaii) used one of her three kills to end the match and give the Pioneers the win.
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) and
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each put down four kills in the set to lead the Pioneers. As a team, C.W. Post totaled 14 kills with only one attacking error.
NYIT went on a run in the second to earn a set victory as well, going on a 9-0 run during the set to help even the match score at one game apiece. Shelby Cable led all players with five kills in the set, while Ali Falbo went four for four on attacking attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage during the second set.
The third set played much closer than the first two to open the match, as neither team was able to establish a lead larger than two points. A NYIT attacking error gave the Pioneers the set win in the end, with 15 kills during the set helped propel the team to a victory.
With the score deadlocked at 16 a side in the fourth set and C.W. Post looking to take the set and match victory, the Bears used another long run to secure the fourth set victory and force a fifth and deciding set. At that point of a 16-16 tie, NYIT used a 9-3 run highlighted by four kills on the part of Tugce Sirdas during the run.
In the fifth and deciding, both teams once again battled till the end as leads were quickly erased by both sides. Cable helped lead the attack for the Bears during the final frame, ending the set and match with one of her 22 kills on the night.
Cable fell one kill shy of the team lead, as Sirdas finished the night with 23 kills to go along with 13 digs. Cable put together 10 digs together with her 22 kills and Damla Albayrak helped set up the duo with 56 assists on the night. Albayrak also achieved a double-double with 15 digs on her own.
For C.W. Post, Schroer ended her night as the team leader in kills with 17 and fell one shy of the team lead in digs with 16. Delfs went for 12 kills on her night with a .310 hitting percentage. Namahoe ended her night with a stat line of 11 kills, eight digs, 3.5 total blocks.
Next on the schedule for the Pioneers is a home match next Tuesday, ending a seven match away from home stretch. C.W. Post will host Mercy on Tuesday, Oct. 4 for a conference match set to begin at 7 p.m. inside the Pratt Recreation Center on the campus of C.W. Post.
