Dowling Topples No. 6 Women's Soccer, 2-0
Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 11, 2012) – A pair of Dowling goals and a strong defensive effort by the Golden Lions led to a 2-0 defeat for the No. 6 LIU Post Pioneers in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers end their season at 15-3-2, while Dowling improves to 14-3-3 and advances to next week's NCAA third round contest against the winner of American International/Saint Rose.
The game was largely contested at midfield, with each team battling hard for possession. Dowling took several shots early, and following a Pioneer foul past midfield in the 23rd minute, the Golden Lions were awarded a free kick. Erika Krumholz got a shot off as the ball was played to the far post, and senior goalkeeper
Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) made the first save, but Alexis Parrotta was right there to boot in the rebound and give the Golden Lions a 1-0 lead.
Another Dowling goal in the 72nd minute by Lindsey Thompson saw the Pioneers facing a 2-0 deficit with under 20 minutes to play, and the Pioneers just could not muster enough offense to overcome the DC lead.
Dowling held a 13-6 edge in shots, with each team taking four corners. Fierro made three saves in the loss, while Dowling goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo made one stop for the Golden Lions.
