Marciniak Leads Women's Basketball Past Felician, 69-54

OAKDALE, N.Y. (November 24, 2012) - The LIU Post women's basketball team posted a 69-54 victory over Felician College on Saturday at the Dowling Tournament, getting a 21-point effort from senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

The Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the season, while Felician slips to 0-4.

Along with her 21 points, Marciniak also pulled down a Pioneer-high eight rebounds.  The rest of the LIU Post offense was balanced with eight other Pioneers scoring at least four points.  Sophomore Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) added nine points and four rebounds, while senior Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) contributed eight points, six steals, four rebounds, and four assists.

The game was won with defense, as both teams shot under 40 percent from field goal range.  The Pioneers shot .375 on 27 of 72 shooting, while Felician shot a mere .328 from field goal range on 21-64 shooting.  Neither team excelled from beyond the arc, with Felician having a slight edge hitting two of 11 three-point attempts, and LIU Post sinking just two of 12.  The Pioneers drained 13-23 free throw attempts, while Felician hit 10-13.  The Pioneers held a 44-40 advantage on the glass.

The first half finished with the Pioneers holding a three point advantage at 31-28.

Halfway through the second half, LIU Post had increased its lead to 20 (55-35), but the Golden Falcons would not go down without a fight, closing out the game on a 14-9 run but it was not enough to pull even close to the Pioneers with the scoreboard reading 69-54 at the final buzzer in favor of LIU Post.

Sophomore Eliana Scanlon led Felician with 12 points. Teammate Trina Plummer turned in 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Pioneers conclude play in the Dowling College Holida Tournament on Sunday afternoon by facing Goldey-Beacom College at 12 p.m.
