Marciniak's Double-Double Helps Pioneers Sink Goldey-Beacom, 73-64

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2012) – Senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 boards to lead the LIU Post women's basketball team to a 73-64 victory over Goldey-Beacom College on the second day of the Dowling Holiday Tournament.

The Pioneers improve to 3-0, while Goldey-Beacom slips to 3-5.

Senior Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) added 15 points, five assists, and five steals, while junior Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) and freshman Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) contributed 11 points apiece for the Pioneers.  Senior Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) matched Marciniak's 11 rebound total, while also swatting a game-high three blocks.

The Lightning's Irene Hudson led all players with 24 points, and Chelsea Grover pulled down a game-high 13 boards.

The Pioneers registered a .410 (25-61) shooting percentage from field goal range, drained 7-21 three pointers for a .333 percentage, and hit 16-25 (.640) from the charity stripe.  The Lightning shot .365 from field goal range, 0-8 from beyond the arc, and sunk 18-22 free-throw attempts.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-0 start and led by as much as 13 during the first half.  Goldey-Beacom cut to lead to three at 34-31 with a minute left in the first, but the Pioneers ended the half with a six point lead (39-33) after a Marciniak jumper and a Caggiano trey. 

Goldey-Beacom opened up the second half with six straight points to tie the game for the first time after just two minutes passed in the second half.  Some more back-and-forth play occurred during the half with two more tie scores, but the Pioneers never fell behind again after the score was tied 50-50 at the 12 minute mark.

The Pioneers open up both play at home and conference play Saturday, Dec. 1 as they play host to the University of Bridgeport at 1:30 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.
