Pioneers Hold Off Late Rally By Bridgeport, Win 73-68

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2012) – The LIU Post women's basketball team fended off a late rally by the University of Bridgeport to secure its first conference win with a score of 73-68 Saturday afternoon in the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Purple Knights slip to 5-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
Senior 
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore 
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 18 points each, while senior 
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 12 points and grabbing a game-best 13 boards.  Kopp also added a season-high seven blocks.
Aziza Patterson scored 16 of her 24 total points in the second half to lead Bridgeport's comeback effort.
The Pioneers shot .452 (28 of 62) from field goal range, including 4-17 from three point range, and was 13-22 from the charity stripe.  Bridgeport shot .368 (25-68) from field goal range and was 14-19 from the line.
The Purple Knights scored the first basket of the game, but that was the only time the Pioneers trailed as they followed that opening basket with a 14-2 run to take a commanding lead.  LIU Post led by as many as 16 points during the first half.  Bridgeport's Danielle Dorsett hit a jumper with seconds left in the half to cut the Pioneers' lead to 31-23 at the closing buzzer.
Bridgeport rallied during the beginning of the second half, cutting LIU Post's lead to just four, but a three pointer by 
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) followed with jumpers by both Marciniak and Williams quickly brought the Pioneers' lead back to double-digits with 15:30 left in the game.  LIU Post never let the Purple Knights back in the game with the scoreboard reading 73-68 at the final buzzer.
The Pioneers hit the road to face ECC rival Dowling College Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.
