BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2012) – The LIU Post women's basketball team finished out its weekend Winter Classic with a 61-44 victory over Southern New Hampshire University behind a 14 point effort by senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

The Pioneers are now 7-2 on the season, while the Penman even out at 5-5.

Junior Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) proved to be a spark off the bench for the Pioneers registering 11 points, four assists, and two steals.  Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) had another solid night with 10 points and four rebounds from the point guard position.  Marciniak grabbed a Pioneer-high nine boards, while Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) and Nijah LaCourt (Bronx, N.Y.) added eight rebounds apiece.

Lorreta Rocha and Sloane Sorrell recorded double-doubles for Southern New Hampshire.  Rocha recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Sorrell registered 13 points and 12 rebounds.

LIU Post edged out the Penman in total rebounds (44-39), assists (14-2), blocks (5-1), and steals (10-9).  The Pioneers shot just .387 (24-62) from field goal range, hitting just 4-16 from beyond the arc, and knocked down 9-12 from the free throw line.  The LIU Post defense held the Penman to a mere .302 (16-53) field goal percentage, .125 from downtown (1-8), and .524 (11-21) from the charity stripe.

The Pioneers took advantage of the Penman's lack of ball control, scoring 27 points off of Southern New Hampshire's 22 turnovers.  The Pioneers were also dominant in the paint with 36 of their 61 points coming within the key, while the Penman scored just 18 points within the paint.

After ten minutes passed in the first half, the Pioneers' had jumped out to a 20-5 lead that was capped off by a Sears' trey from an Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) assist.  Back-and-forth play ensued over the next couple minutes, but the Pioneers remained dominant leading by as many as 20 points for the second time in the half after a 9-4 run highlighted by a steal by Ariana Ijaduola (Teaneck, N.J.) who then dribbled to the other end of the floor and converted the and-one situation for the three-point play.  The half ended with the Pioneers holding a 14 point advantage over the Penmen, 37-23.

Southern New Hampshire opened up the second half with a 7-2 spurt, but it was not enough to come even close to diminishing the Pioneers' lead.  LIU Post never let the Penmen come within single digits for the last 16 minutes of the game.  Marciniak scored six points in the second half to keep the Pioneers out of reach from the Penmen.  When the final buzzer sounded, the Pioneers finished with a 17 point advantage over Southern New Hampshire, 61-44.

The Pioneers kick off the New Year on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 in Albany, N.Y. as take on The College of Saint Rose.  Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. in the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
