Women's Basketball Moves On To ECC Semifinals With 85-70 Win Over NYIT

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 29, 2012) – The C.W. Post women's basketball team advanced to the semifinal of the East Coast Conference Championships after defeating NYIT, 85-70, Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
 
C.W. Post improves to 21-8 overall – its most wins since the 1987-88 season when the Pioneers were 22-9.  The Pioneers will advance to play top-seeded Dowling on Saturday at 12 p.m. at host Queens College.  NYIT ends its season with an overall record of 16-13.
 
Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led all scorers with 23 points, converting 8-14 from field goal range and added five assists and five assists.  Junior center Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) pulled down 10 rebounds and added 10 points and while matching her career-high of five blocks.  Sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 13 points, including three treys, while adding four assists and two steals.  Sophomore guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) added 11 points, including three triples for the Pioneers.
 
Rebecca Lynch led the Bears with 15 points on 7-9 shooting from the field.  Sabrinna Moore scored 13 with four steals while Cierra Baker and Nikki Jo Rotolo each scored 11.
 
The Pioneers spotted themselves a 5-0 lead early in the game and led 13-6 before allowing an 8-0 run that gave the Bears a one-point lead.  C.W. Post reclaimed the lead for good with a three from Sears at 10:44.
 
C.W. Post led36-30 at halftime and Joyner led with 10 points.
 
In the second half, the Pioneers' shooting percentage skyrocketed to 69.2 percent as they converted 18-26 from the field.  They opened the half with a 20-8 burst and maintained a double-figure lead throughout the remainder of the half. 
 
The Bears knocked the lead down to 11 (65-54) with 7:56 but that was as close as they would get as the Pioneers responded with a 9-3 run to keep the game out of reach. 
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting .517 (30-58) from the field and went 16-27 from the charity stripe.  NYIT shot .455 (25-55) from field goal range and was 17-28 at the line.  Each team grabbed 37 boards off the glass.
