Garriock Places Fifth in the Nation in the 500 Free for Women's Swimming

MANSFIELD, TEXAS (March 16, 2012) – Day three of the NCAA Swimming Championships once again developed an All-American honor for Tamara Garriock (Duncan, Canada), while Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) earned an All-American Honorable Mention.

During the very first event of the day Friday morning, Garriock was part of the fourth of sixth heats during the preliminary round for the 500 free.  In the heat, the sophomore qualified for the championship final for Friday evening after placing seventh and establishing a new Pioneer record, finishing at a 4:57.10 time.  She then came back during the finals to rewrite the record again and place fifth to garner All-American honors in a time of 4:55.19.  The finish also gained 14 points toward the C.W. Post total for the weekend. 

Pettersson slotted herself in the consolation final of the 100 back event after finishing 13th during the preliminaries at a time of 56.69.  She then garnered All-American Honorable Mention in the event for her 57.44 time during the consolation final swim. 

C.W. Post has climbed to a total of 56 points over the course of the championships, currently placing the team in 18th place.  Wayne State has grown a first place lead to 10 points over UC San Diego as Wayne State has a total of 313 points. 

Saturday will conclude the four-day championship, as the Pioneer will be represented in two individual events and one relay event during the preliminary rounds in the morning session.
