Baseball Sweeps a Twinbill From Queens, 2-0 and 4-2

FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 24, 2012) – C.W. Post baseball swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from Queens by scores of 2-0 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 9-10 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Queens slips to 5-8, 0-2 in ECC action.
The Pioneers took the lead in the second inning as
Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) singled down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt and wild pitch moved him to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.).
C.W. Post got an insurance run in the sixth as
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on Herring's single up the middle.
James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) was the winning pitcher, throwing six shutout innings and allowing only three hits, striking out six.
Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the save with a scoreless seventh.
Herring's 2-for-3 effort led the Pioneers offensively.
In the fourth inning of game,
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) roped a one-out a single to center, and Herring followed to put two on. A wild pitch advanced both runners, and a single to center by
Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.) pushed across a run to get the Pioneers on the board.
An inning later, Pimentel scored on a single to center by
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) to make it 2-0.
Queens pushed across two in the sixth as Mike Shada hit a two-run single.
But the Pioneers scored two in the top of the seventh as Maccarone had an RBI double and
Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right to take a 4-2 lead.
Starting pitcher
Mike Eckerle pitched 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on two hits, striking out a career high 10, but it was
Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) who got the win in relief with scoreless inning and a third.
Maccarone, Herring and Santos had two hits apiece to lead the Pioneers.
C.W. Post and Queens continue play tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a single game in Brookville, N.Y.
