No. 7 New Haven Outlasts No. 3 Women's Lacrosse in Overtime, 18-17

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 28, 2012) – Despite six goals from Ashley Olen (Islip, N.Y.) and four goals and two assists by Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.), the third-ranked Pioneers lost a dog fight in overtime, 18-17, to the seventh-ranked New Haven Chargers on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse. 

The Pioneers slip to 4-1 while New Haven improves to 6-0.

Olen opened the game with a goal just 32 seconds into play. The Chargers responded with three straight, including two by Sarah Magnone, to take a 3-1 lead.  The Pioneers cut it to 3-2 on a tally by Spagnoletta, but New Haven scored two straight to take a 5-2 lead. 

But head coach Meghan McNamara called timeout and settled the Pioneers, who responded accordingly.  Spagnoletta scored two straight to make it 5-4, then Olen went on a five-goal  - one unassisted, two from Spagnoletta and two assists from Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) – that lasted from 14:59 until 4:12 and made the score 9-5.  Magnone scored again to make it 9-6, followed by a tally by Ashley Ferrandiz to close out the half with a 9-7 Pioneer advantage. 

Ferrandiz opened the scoring for New Haven in the second half, and Alexis Gabbe followed with the equalizer to make the score 9-9 at 26:49.

The Pioneers regained a two-goal advantage as Kathleen Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) scored at 25:30 and Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) scored unassisted at 20:39 to make the score 11-9.

But New Haven answered with three straight goals by Gabbe, Natalie Lieverman, and Sarah Magnone to take a 12-11 lead with 13:58 remaining in the game. 

The Pioneers pulled ahead 13-12 on goals by Spagnoletta and Siloe, but New Haven tied it yet again at 10:47 on a Magnone goal.

Mayott gave the Pioneers a 14-13 lead, but New haven scored two straight to take a 15-14 lead with 5:18 to play.

It looked as though New Haven would earn the victory as the last few minutes ticked down, but with just seven seconds on the clock, Mayott scored to tie the game and force overtime.

The Pioneers took a two-goal lead in overtime as Sileo scored just thirty seconds in followed by a tally by Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) at 4:12, but Ferrandiz and Lieberman scored at 3:09 and 1:59 respectively to tie the score at 17-17, and Kathryn Campbell scored her lone goal of the day – the game-winner –with 55 second remaining to seal the victory for the Chargers. 

Olen and Spagnoletta were joined by Sileo with two goals and four assists, while Mayott scored three goals and added two assists.  Losco chipped in with a goal and an assists.  Goalkeeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the effort.
