Simone Pushes Baseball Past Caldwell, 5-2
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 29, 2012) – Behind a three-run triple from Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) and a strong pitching effort, the C.W. Post baseball team defeated Caldwell today by a final of 5-2.
The Pioneers improve to 12-10 with the non-conference victory while Caldwell slips to 4-14 on the season.
The Cougars managed to strike first during the third inning of play today, as the team pushed one across against Pioneer starting pitcher, Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.). After singling and stealing second during the next at-bat, Stpehen Dodd came around to score on Joe O'Donnell single, giving Caldwell the 1-0 edge.
C.W. Post quickly responded in the bottom half of the third, as Simone came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning. The right fielder then drove a ball to left center that found the gap and allowed all three runners to score while he advance to third on the triple. The Pioneers now held a 3-1 lead after three innings.
That 3-1 score remained until the sixth inning when Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.) drove in Vincent Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) on a double to right field. Caldwell chipped into the lead to make things 4-2 midway through the fourth on a run scoring, ground out. However, C.W. Post took back that run in the bottom of the eighth with a balk that allowed Anthony Corona (Levittown, N.Y.) to score and push the score to 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
Hudson and Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) shared pitching duties today for C.W. Post as Hudson went the first five innings and Martinez closed things out in the final four. Allowing only four hits and striking nine, Hudson goes to 1-0 on the season while Martinez earns his first save behind two strikeouts and one hit surrendered.
The Pioneers will next play tomorrow at Mercy for a game as C.W. Post travels to the Mavericks home field for the conference game.
