Baseball Splits With Stonehill

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 4, 2012) – C.W. Post baseball split a doubleheader with Stonehill, winning game one 5-1 but dropping the nightcap 7-4 in a Sunday afternoon non-conference doubleheader.
C.W. Post improves to 4-3, while Stonehill stands at 6-2.
Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore pitcher
Mike Eckerle (Hewlett, N.Y.) struggled a bit at the start. Matt Zeiner drew a one-out walk, advanced to second and third on passed balls, then scored when Mike Magnussen stole second base and drew the throw.
The Pioneers got on the board in the second as
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single. A throwing error on
Nick Compito's (Jericho, N.Y.) but put runners on second and third, and
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) drove in the first run of the game as he reached on a fielder's choice. After Maccarone stole second to put runners on second and third again, Chenicek reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Compito for a 2-1 lead. An errant pickoff attempt scored Maccarone for the third run of the game and gave the Pioneers a two-run cushion.
Matt Simone (West Islip, N.Y.) roped a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to put the Pioneers up 5-1. Eckerle settled in and pitched well, earning the win with five innings of work, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven.
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) earned the save with four innings of no-hit shutout relief. Offensively,
Vincent Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 to lead the Pioneers as the plate.
In game two, the Pioneers got a strong effort from starter
James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) who shut out the Skyhawks for the first five innings as the Pioneers scored runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead into the sixth. But C.W. Post ran into trouble in the top of the sixth as Steve Popp hit an RBI single to left center.
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) came on in relief, but two errors on the same play allowed three runs to score, giving Stonehill a 4-3 lead.
The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the on an RBI single by
Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.) and it stayed tied at four until the top of the ninth, when Mike Ziner hit a bases-loaded double to give the Skyhawks a 7-4 lead.
C.W. Post is off until Friday, March 9 as it hosts Dominican for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
