Women's Basketball Falls To Southern Connecticut On Late Shot In NCAA Quarterfinal, 58-57

WALTHAM, Mass. (March 9, 2012) – The C.W. Post women's basketball team looked to be on its away to advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament, but  an 11-0 run late in the second half helped the Southern Connecticut State Owls steal a win from the Pioneers, 58-57, Friday afternoon at Bentley University's Dana Center.
 
Southern Connecticut improves to 25-5 and will play Holy Family in the semifinal round on Saturday.  C.W. Post closes out its season with a 21-10 overall record, its highest win total since the 1987-88 season when it went 22-7.
 
Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led all scorers with 16 points and added two steals for the Pioneers.  Sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) added 13 points with nine assists and three steals.  Junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds and added two assists, three blocks and two steals to her stats.  Junior center Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.
 
Southern Connecticut's Keshia Primo also scored 16 points in the game to lead the Owls and grabbed six rebounds along with three assists and two steals.  Sylvonya Moore scored 11 points with four steals while Moni Smith-Ocran registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and four steals.
 
The Pioneers held a 16-point lead – their highest in the game – against the Owls at 17:48, but the Owls inched closer with baskets and used an 11-0 run to tie the game at 45-all with  6:08 to play. 
 
The Pioneers allowed one more tie-up but refused to give up the lead and built it to five (57-52) with a triple from freshman guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) and a layup from Peters .  It looked the visitors were in control but a layup from Shaniqua Fuller at 1:01 was followed up with two free throws from Fuller after an intentional foul was called on the Pioneers, making it a 1-point game.
 
Joyner drew a foul with 14 seconds on the clock but could not convert the first shot and the Owls quickly corralled it and sent it to Moore, who drove in the paint to score the winning basket with 4.7 seconds on the clock.
 
The Pioneers came out of a timeout and tried to set up for a basket but Joyner's jumper attempt fell short.
 
C.W. Post was on fire in the first half and shot 10-27 from the field in, including 6-11 from the charity stripe.  The Pioneers used a 13-2 run to pull away from the Owls, beginning with a layup from Caggianio at 9:36 and was capped off with a pair of free throws from Peters at 6:19.
 
Joyner led all scorers in the first half with nine points on 4-7 shooting from the floor.  Kopp scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.  The Pioneers held a 25-20 advantage on the boards and outscored the Owls, 14-4, in the paint.
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting 21-53 from the field (.396), including 3-9 behind the arc, and went 12-20 at the line.  Southern Connecticut shot 23-72 from the floor and was 9-12 at the line.  The Owls cleaned up on the glass with a 46-39 advantage.

Joyner finished her four-year at C.W. Post with 1,563 points for the Pioneers.
