BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 1, 2012) – The C.W. Post baseball team split an East Coast Conference twinbill with Mercy College, dropping the first contest 2-0 but winning the nightcap in walkoff fashion, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers go to 14-11 on the season and 5-1 in conference play, while Mercy stands at 5-18, 3-5 in conference action.

In game one, Bryan Greig outdueled C.W. Post's Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) for the victory, as a third-inning error was the difference in the game.  The error scored one run, and a squeeze bunt on the next play made it a 2-0 game.  The Pioneers left eight runners on base as they struggled with runners in scoring position.  Budkevics finished with seven innings pitched, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, striking out five.  Greig had a final line or seven innings, shutting out the Pioneers on five hits and striking out eight.

In game two, the Pioneers staked a 1-0 lead in the second as Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) singled with two outs.  Two batters later, he scored on a single to left by Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.).

The Pioneers made it a 2-0 game in the fifth as Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) led off with a triple to right center and scored on sacrifice fly to center field by Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.).

But Mercy rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth on an infield throwing error and a two-run double that gave the Mavericks a 4-2 lead.

The Pioneers tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning as Chenicek was hit by a pitch with one out.  Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) followed with a single, and a deep fly ball to left advanced the runners to second and third.  Iacono then ripped a double to left field to drive in both runs and tie the score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) singled to first base followed by a bunt single by Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.).  Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) singled through the left side to drive in Tolan for the victory.

Tolan and Brunetti each had three hits while Iacono had two hits and two RBI in the game.  Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the pitcher of record, earning the win with two innings of work, allowing one run on one hit.  Starting pitcher James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) was solid with five innings, allowing only one earned run on six hits.

The Pioneers host Molloy in an ECC matchup on Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30.
