BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 14, 2012) - The C.W. Post baseball team swept a twinbill from the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon by scores of 2-1 and 3-1 in East Coast Conference action.
The Pioneers improve their overall record to 19-14, 12-4 in conference play.
In game one, C.W. Post pushed across a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.) to take the lead, but Bridgeport tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to T.J. Mangan.
However, C.W. Post scored in the top of the seventh as freshman designated hitter Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a throwing error by the Bridgeport catcher.
Junior pitcher Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the win in relief of senior James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.), who allowed only one hit through five innings. Zapulla pitched two innings and scattered three hits.
In the second game, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the third as Brunetti hit an RBI single to score Pimentel from third.
Brunetti was the catalyst again in the sixth as he led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by junior shortstop Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.). Herring scored on an RBI single by junior third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
The Purple Knights scored a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Ryan Barba, but a flyout with runners on second and third ended the threat and the game.
Brunetti led the Pioneers with two hits and Budkevics went to 5-3 on the season, pitching a complete game and scattering five hits while striking out three.
C.W. Post is back in action on Sunday against Bridgeport, playing a 12 p.m. contest.
