Bridgeport Edges Out Baseball, 5-3

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 14, 2012) – The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning that broke 3-3 tie and lifted them to a 5-3 win over C.W. Post in an East Coast Conference baseball game played Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Complex.
 
Bridgeport improves its overall record to 9-14 overall and 5-8 in the ECC.  C.W. Post's record dips to 19-15 overall and 10-5 in conference play.
 
The teams kept each other scoreless through the first three innings before Bridgeport put a run on the board in the top of the fourth when shortstop Berny Polanco singled to right field to score right fielder Matt Ranaudo from second.
 
The Pioneers matched it in the bottom half of the inning when junior first baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a sac fly out to right field that brought home junior catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.), who had reached base with a double down the left field line.
 
The Purple Knights took the lead back in the fifth on an infield throwing error.  The Pioneers tied the game up again in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore third baseman Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) reached base on an infield throwing error that allowed sophomore left fielder Vincent Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) to score from third.
 
C.W. Post scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on an RBI single from Tolan that scored Iacono for the second time in the game.
 
The lead did not stick for long as Bridgeport tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth when Polanco hit an RBI groundout to second base that scored designated hitter Mike Olszyk, who reached on an infield fielding error.
 
The Purple Knights scored the two runs in the ninth on an RBI single from Ranaudo and a wild pitch charged to freshman Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.).
 
Second baseman John Ascenzia batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Purple Knights while Polanco drove in two on two hits.
 
Anthony Tortolano earned his second win of the season after pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth, letting up two hits with one strikeout.  Starter Matt Wing allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with one strikeout.

Iacono and junior shortstop Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) each batted 2-for-4 at the plate for the Pioneers.  Tolan led the team with two RBI.
 
Arena took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout.  Senior Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) pitched six innings for the Pioneers and let up one run on seven hits with two strikeouts.  Senior Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched an inning and two thirds and allowed one run on one hit.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, April 17 at Caldwell College for a 3 p.m. start.
