Baseball Defeats Caldwell, 6-1

CALDWELL, N.J. (April 17, 2012) – Junior pitcher Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched seven innings and earned the victory,  junior Brian Tardif (Cutchogue, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate save, and the C.W. Post baseball team posted a 6-1 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon.

C.W. Post improved to 20-14 overall while Caldwell slipped to 9-23 on the season. 

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double to left center by Tom Kastelan (Deer Park, N.Y.)

C.W. Post pushed across four runs in the fourth as freshman first baseman Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) scored on a double steal, followed by an RBI single to right field by sophomore first baseman Phil Loprete (Bellerose, N.Y.).  Two more unearned runs in the inning made the score 5-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

Cladwell got on the board with a run in the sixth, but Chenicek and Tardif shut down the Cougar offense the rest of the way, the Pioneers tacked on another run in the ninth on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Ryan Sloane (Westbury, N.Y.).

Chenicek's final line was 7.0 innings pitched, scattering five hits and striking out six batters.  Tardif one-hit the Cougars over the final two innings for the save.  Offensively, Brunetti and junior shortstop Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Pioneers in the victory.

C.W. Post will host Queens in an East Coast Conference game tomorrow starting at 3 p.m.
