No. 5 Women's Lacrosse Holds On For 15-13 Victory Over No. 7 Stonehill On Senior Day

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2012) – In a matchup of two top 10 teams, the fifth-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team hung on in the end to defeat the seventh-ranked Stonehill College Skyhawks, 15-13, earlier today on Hickox Field.
With the non-conference victory, the Pioneers move to 12-1 on the year while Stonehill's season record falls to 11-3.
The Skyhawks struck first a little over one minute into the first half as Sarah Galligan found Kelsey Reilly for her 29th goal of the season to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead that lasted for over six minutes.

Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) then went back-to-back in span of just a little over one minute of play, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder
Katie Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) and senior midfielder
Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) connected on one goal apiece to close out C.W. Post's 5-0 run and pushing the lead to 5-1.
Samantha Lynott cut into the lead with a goal shortly after Spanoletta's and then also found Heather Sullivan just 40 seconds later to bring the Pioneers lead to 5-3.
C.W. Post grew the lead to 8-4 going into halftime, highlighted by two goals on the part of junior attacker
Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) and two assists by Sileo. Also in the first half, junior goalkeeper
Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) came up with five saves and the Pioneers also came up with 12 ground balls compared to only seven for the Skyhawks.
Sileo pushed the Pioneers to a 10-4 advantage early in the second half as she assisted on goals by Rotan and Ross just over five minutes into the half.
Over the next 16 minutes of play though, Stonehill gained control of momentum as the team went on a 9-2 run to take the lead at 13-12 with just over eight minutes to play. During that run, Reilly and Lynott each tallied two goals and five of Stonehill's goals in the run went unassisted.
Now down a goal, the Pioneers responded with a connection of Sileo to Ross on two goals that gave C.W. Post back the lead at 14-13 with just a few minutes remaining. The first goal came up on a man-down situation, with the second being scored on a man-up opportunity. With a minute left, Mayott put in her second goal of the game to give the Pioneers some insurance.
Ross led all goal scorers with six and Sileo ended her day with seven assists and two goals to help guide the Pioneers to win. Mayott, Olen, and Rotan each contributed two goals. In goal, Mosca earned the victory with seven saves and three groundballs. senior defender
Chelsea Donaldson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) came up with four groundballs and also caused two turnovers.
For the Skyhawks, Lynott scored four goals and dished out one assist and Reilly added three goals to the effort. Goalkeeper Ashley Armstrong wound up with 10 saves and three groundballs in the net for Stonehill.
Next for the Pioneers will be another top ten matchup with ninth-ranked West Chester on Tuesday, April 24, at 4 p.m. on the campus of West Chester.
