Late Inning Scoring Propels Baseball Past Molloy, 7-4
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 29, 2012) – The C.W. Post baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and take a 7-4 decision from the Molloy Lions on Sunday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 26-15 overall and 15-5 in the ECC, while Molloy slips to 19-24, 9-12 in conference play.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) drove in
Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.) on a fielder's choice.
The home team scored three runs in the second as
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) and
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) knocked back-to-back RBI singles, followed by an outfield error that allowed the third run to score.
Leading 4-0, the Pioneer bats went silent for the next few innings as the hosts struggled with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 runners on base. Molloy took advantage and touched starter
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) for two runs in the top of the sixth.
The Lions continued their comeback, scoring two more in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Ray McCourt.
However, reliever
Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) got a ground ball to end the inning without further damage.
The Pioneers responded in the bottom of the eighth as Tolan drew a one-out walk and stole second. He scored on a two-out single to right center by
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.). Brunetti stole second, then scored on Corona's double down the left field line to make it a two-run lead for the Pioneers. Junior shortstop
Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) doubled to left center to cap the scoring for the hosts.
Zapulla pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. His final line was 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three hits. Budkevics went 7.1 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out two.
Offensively, Brunetti and Corona each had three hits for the Pioneers, while Chenicek and Herring each had two hits.
