Baseball Drops Saturday Twinbill To St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-5 And 7-0

POMONA, N.Y. (April 7, 2012) – The C.W. Post baseball team came out on the losing end of a doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas.  The Spartans won both games by scores of 9-5 and 7-0.
 
St. Thomas Aquinas improves its overall record to 22-10 overall and 9-1 in the ECC while C.W. Post slips to 15-13 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
 
Each team scored a run in the first inning.  The Pioneers put a run up with an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.).  The Spartans answered with a sacrifice fly from catcher George Wargo in the bottom of the inning.
 
STAC added two runs in the third on an infield single and a groundout.
 
C.W. Post cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth, beginning with a sacrifice fly to center field from junior catcher Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) that brought home Tolan.  Junior shortstop Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) followed next with a sacrifice fly to center that scored sophomore center fielder Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.).
 
The Spartans widened its lead in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on four hits that was highlighted by a two-run triple from designated hitter Mike Russo.  STAC added three more runs in the sixth inning with a bases-clearing double from center fielder Nicholas Barbalato.
 
Barbalato led the Spartans in hitting, going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.  Frank Salerno batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
Matt Marotta earned his fifth win of the season after going the distance on the mound.  He scattered five hits and two earned runs over seven innings while striking out three.
 
Junior Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) was handed the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
 
In the nightcap, the Spartans put up five runs in the first inning that included a two-run double from left fielder Derek Hirsch.  They added two more runs in the fourth, starting with a sacrifice fly from Barbalato.  The second run was scored when Salerno stole home after reaching on a fielder's choice.
 
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the sixth inning on singles from junior third baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior right fielder Gabriel Santos (Jamaica, N.Y.) and a walk from sophomore designated hitter Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) with two outs.  The Spartans got out of the jam when sophomore left fielder Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) fouled out to third base.
 
Hirsch batted 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.  Salerno was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Spartans.
 
Eric Cooper got the win on the mound after pitching six innings without allowing a single run and scattering five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
 
Senior James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on seven hits through four innings pitched.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Monday, April 9 for a single game against St. Thomas Aquinas at 3:30 p.m.
