BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 9, 2012) – Trailing by 10-0 through the first six innings, the C.W. Post Pioneers staged what seemed an improbably comeback and scored 11 runs over the final three innings, including three in the ninth, to cap off an 11-10 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas in an East Coast Conference baseball match played Monday afternoon at the Baseball Complex.

C.W. Post improves to 16-14 overall and 9-3 in conference play.  St. Thomas Aquinas slips to 22-11 overall and 9-2 in the ECC.

Down by three runs in the ninth, sophomore designated hitter Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) led off the bottom of inning with a single to right field.  He advanced to second base on a single up the middle from junior first baseman Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and went to third on a walk issued to freshman right fielder Tom Kastelan (Deer Park, N.Y.).  With the bases loaded, junior Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) came in to pinch hit and drove in the first run of the inning when he was plunked in the back,  allowing Brunetti to score from third.  The tying run crossed the plate on another bases-loaded walk issued to sophomore shortstop Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.).  And with two outs and the bases still loaded, sophomore center fielder Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) bunted the first pitch down the left infield line that allowed Herring to cross the plate to end the game.

The Spartans took a 6-0 lead through the first two innings on six hits and one error.  They tallied their seventh run in the fourth on an RBI double from center fielder Nicholas Barbalato and scored three more in the top of the fifth inning that included a two-run blast to right field from first baseman Andrew Hancsak.

Junior Brian Tardif (Cutchogue, N.Y.) was the winning pitcher after pitching the eighth and ninth innings scoreless and giving up just one hit while striking out two.  Senior Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched the first four innings and allowed nine earned runs on 12 hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Tolan led the Pioneers at the plate, batting 3-for-5 with two RBI while Chenicek was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Sophomore left fielder David Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) entered the game as the left fielder in the top of the sixth and batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Joe DePool was charged with the loss after pitching two thirds of an inning between the eighth and ninth and allowing three earned runs on two hits and a walk.  Starter Joe Ferrara pitched seven complete innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two batters.

C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 at Dowling College at 3 p.m.
