Dowling Escapes With 3-2 Win Over Baseball At ECC Championships

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 5, 2012) – Dowling College scratched out a run in the sixth inning en route to a 3-2 win over C.W. Post on the first day of the East Coast Conference Baseball Championships at Provident Bank Park.
Dowling improves to 29-17 overall and will play St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday at 12 p.m. C.W. Post falls to 27-19 and will play the University of Bridgeport at 9 a.m.
Freshman
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) drove in the game's first run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single up the middle that brought home sophomore third baseman
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) from second.
Dowling got the run back in the bottom half of the inning as right fielder Joseph Candela reached on an RBI fielder's choice that scored second baseman Andrew Abreau from third.
The Golden Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to center field from Rob Veltre that brought home left fielder Sean Craig.
C.W. Post knotted the score up at 2-2 in the fifth as Brunetti collected his second RBI of the day with a double to right center to score Tolan from second. Tolan reached on an outfield error to start the inning.
The winning run was scored in the sixth when Dowling's Rob Veltre reached on an infield error that allowed Sean Craig to score from second.
The Pioneers outhit Golden Lions, 9-5, but stranded nine runners throughout the game.
Abreau led the Golden Lions with two hits with a run scored. Adam Brown pitched six innings and scattered two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. J.J. Bessel picked up the save by shutting the Pioneers out in the final three innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.
Brunetti and Tolan each collected two hits apiece as Brunetti drove Tolan in for each of the Pioneers' runs. Junior
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) went the distance, scattering three runs on five hits with a game-high nine strikeouts.
