Women's Lacrosse Claims Top Spot in Final IWLCA Poll
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 1, 2012) - The LIU Post Pioneers, the 2012 national champions, rose four spots to land at No. 1 in the final IWLCA poll for the 2012 season. This is the first poll in which the New York school was ranked at the No. 1 spot for the 2012 season; the same 15 schools that appeared in the final regular season poll are found in this final ranking. This is also the first week that a conference other than the Northeast-10 sits on top of the poll as LIU Post is a member of the ECC.
The Pioneers won the 2012 National Championship, the third in the history of the program, defeating West Chester, 17-16.
The Northeast-10 still boasts the highest number of institutions ranked with five. Le Moyne leads the pack at No. 3, with Adelphi right behind at No. 4. Stonehill moved to No. 7, while New Haven (No. 8) and Bentley (No. 9) remained the same as the final regular season ranking.
The PSAC also claimed five ranked schools. West Chester, the national runner-up, rose five spots and landed at No. 2. Lock Haven leads a group of four schools; the Lady Eagles remained at No. 11 while Bloomsburg (No. 12) remained one spot behind them. Mercyhurst rose to No. 13 and Gannon also rose one spot to land at No. 14.
The ECC's two schools are led by top-ranked and national champion LIU Post at No. 1; Dowling closed out the top-10 at No. 10. Rollins, an independent school in lacrosse, dropped to No. 5 while Limestone from the Conference Carolinas also moved down two slots, ending at No. 6. Florida Southern remained in the rankings at No. 15.
This is the final poll for the IWLCA for the 2012 season.
