Wagner Edges Out Women's Swimming, 152-106

The LIU Post women's swimming team opened up its 2013-14 campaign with a 152-106 loss to Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. The Pioneers picked up first-place wins in six of 14 events on the day.

Two of the LIU Post relay squads grabbed first-place finishes on the afternoon. In the 200-yard medley relay, the Pioneer 'A' team slapped the wall after 1:48.08 had passed to finish first. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 'A' team of Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada), Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.), Seren Jones (London, England, United Kingdom), and Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) got a first-place finish with a finishing time of 1:39.99, and the 'B' team of Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden), Kirsty Elliott (Edinburg, Scotland), and Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) finished in second with a time of 1:45.12.

Sophomore Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) secured two individual first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Both her times in the 100-yard (56.20) and 200-yard fly (2:03.78) were good enough for NCAA "B" cut standards. Kwok also finished with a time of 2:11.69 in the 200-yard individual medley, good for second in the event.

Sophomore Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) registered a win in the 50-yard freestyle, slapping the wall after 24.86 seconds had passed. The final Pioneer victory came from Johanna Pettersson (Kunglav, Sweden)b, as she finished with a time of 2:08.76 in the 200-yard backstroke. Pettersson recorded a second-place finish (59.12) in the 100-yard backstroke as well.

Garriock grabbed two second-place finishes in the meet. She finished with a time of 1:57.27 in the 200-yard freestyle and a clocking of 5:16.35 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 12), as they head to New Haven, Conn. to take on Central Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
