Volleyball Moves Along With 3-1 Besting of Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2013) - On Saturday, freshman outside hitter
Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.) collected a season-best 21 kills and 19 digs, as the LIU Post volleyball team defeated Queens, 3-1, at the Auxiliary Gym in Flushing, N.Y. The victory now extends the Pioneers' winning streak to five.
In the first set, LIU Post (13-3, 5-0 ECC) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Sophomore middle hitter
Melissa Hansen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tallied a kill, and a pair of block assists in the spurt. However, Queens (7-5, 1-3 ECC) chipped away at the deficit, and eventually tied things up at 18-all, via a block.
Later on in the stanza, the two teams remained in a dead heat (22-22), until the Pioneers scored three of the last four points to earn the win, 25-23. Junior middle blocker
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) put the visitors ahead for good with a kill, while McCool added one of her own to clinch it.
The Knights subsequently answered by taking the second set, 25-18, and knotted the contest at 1-apiece in the process. Else Buchmiller (Sacramento, Calif.) led the effort in the game with three kills.
Up 6-5 in the third set, LIU Post took off on a 12-5 run for an 18-10 advantage, and never looked back. McCool slammed down five kills, and served an ace in the streak. The Pioneers would lead by as many as double digits (22-12) in the session, off a

In the fourth and final set, the green and gold, holding a slight 9-8 edge at the time, used a quick 5-1 spurt to make it 14-9. McCool, Adams and freshman middle/right-side hitter
Analise Austin (Honolulu, Hawaii) provided a kill apiece. That proved to be all LIU Post needed, as Queens managed to close the gap to as few as two points on a pair of occasions, but that was as close as it got.
For the match, Hansen finished with nine kills and four block assists. Adams and senior middle hitter
Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) notched eight kills each. Adams also sported five digs and two block assists. Senior middle blocker
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) registered six kills, alongside 23 digs. Junior setter
Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) dished out 46 assists. Sophomore libero
