Women's Swimming Wins 13 of 14 Events Against Sacred Heart

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2013) - Twelve first-place finishes out of 13 total events granted the LIU Post women's swimming team a win over Sacred Heart Saturday in Brookville, N.Y. Senior Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) set new school and pool records with her time in the 400-yard individual medley.
The Pioneer relay teams also picked up wins in both relay events. Junior Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.), along with sophomores Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom), and Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) compiled the 'A' squad that took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.17. They finished just ahead of the Pioneer 'B' team made up of sophomore Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), senior Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.), and juniors Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) and Maxi Russo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) that finished with a time of 1:41.97.
In the 400-yard medley relay, the 'A' squad of Brazier, Garriock, junior Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden), and sophomore Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) slapped the wall in first with a clocking of 3:56.24. Following in second place was the Pioneer 'B' team of Kazaba, Hew, Soerensen, and Norrena with a finishing time of 4:07.15.
Along with Brazier's two relay wins, she also accounted for two individual victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. She barely edged out Soerensen in both races, as the two finished with times of 24.68 and 24.75 in the 50-free, and 53.36 and 54.27 in the 100-free.
Also with two individual wins was Garriock. She nearly had a seven-second cushion in the 200-yard freestyle, reaching the wall after 1:55.01 had passed, while the second place finisher, Jillian Crosby of Sacred Heart, came in at 2:01.87. Her second win came in the 400-yard individual medley in which she set new team and pool records with her time of 4:32.66. Also setting new Top-5 times were the second- and third-place finishers, junior Carolin Rademacher (Isernhagen, Germany) and Pettersson. Rademacher's time of 4:34.33 landed her the third-best time in Pioneer history, while Pettersson's 4:39.15 granted her the fourth-best mark.
Rademacher also grabbed two wins in the breaststroke events with Hew finishing second in both events. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Rademacher posted a time of 1:08.23, with Hew right behind at 1:10.39. Rademacher managed to secure the fifth-best Pioneer time in the 200-yard breaststroke with her finishing time of 2:24.63. Hew came along in second (2:31.84).
The final Pioneer to secure two individual wins was Jones. She finished with a clocking of 1:00.53 in the 100-yard backstroke and a time of 1:01.42 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Freshman Poppy Hill (London, England, United Kingdom) found her way into the Pioneer record books with her finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The freshman's finishing time of 18:35.34 was good for fifth-best in school history. Junior Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) was second with a time of 18:55.60. In the other long distance race of the day, the 500-yard freestyle, Hedberg finished second as well with a time of 5:24.57.
Pettersson and Kwok finished back-to-back in the 200-yard backstroke, with Pettersson holding a six-second advantage with her final time of 2:06.48 to Kwok's 2:12.24. Kwok also grabbed a win in the 200-yard butterfly in which her time of 2:06.68 was good enough for an NCAA "B" cut.
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday (Nov. 9), when they take on Kutztown in Kutztown, Pa. for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
