EWING, N.J. (Dec. 8, 2013) - The ninth-ranked LIU Post women's swimming team routed the competition at the TCNJ Winter Invite, held in Ewing, N.J., amassing a team score of 943 to secure first place. The Pioneers grabbed 13 event wins, and finished second in an additional seven events.
The green and gold seized NCAA "B" cut times in 12 individual and six relay events, and sophomore
Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) notched 'A' cut times in both of the butterfly events, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships in March.
Kwok managed finishing times of 54.02 and 2:01.30 in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, which were both well ahead of the competition and 'A' cuts. She also managed a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a 'B' cut and third-best time in Pioneer history (2:04.93). Finishing ahead of her was teammate
Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) with a second-place finish, second-best Pioneer time, and 'B' cut clocking of 2:04.20.
Also placing with 'B' cuts was senior
Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) and junior
Carolin Rademacher (Isernhagen, Germany) in the 200 IM. Garriock finished in fourth with a time of 2:05.41, while Rademacher was fifth with the fourth-best all-time Pioneer mark of 2:05.84.
In addition, Pettersson came in first in the two backstroke events with 'B' cut times of 57.29 and 2:03.52. Sophomore
Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom) also achieved a 'B' cut time in the 100-yard backstroke with her second-place time of 57.32, which was also good for fourth on the Pioneer all-time ledger.
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore
Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) and junior
Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) finished first, and third, respectively. Soerensen's clocking of 23.82 made the 'B' cut list, and was good for third-best in program history. Delehanty's time of 23.97 was also a 'B' cut and fifth-best in school history.
Garriock grabbed wins with 'B' cut times in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke. In the 200-free, she managed a time of 1:52.73, while teammate
Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) came in third with a clip of 1:55.83, good for fifth-best in Pioneer history. Garriock's time of 2:17.39 in the 200-breast was a team record.
Freshman
Poppy Hill (London, England, United Kingdom) made her way into the Pioneer record books with her finishes in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events. In the 500-free, the rookie swam the fifth-best time in Pioneer history with her first-place mark of 5:08.48. Then, in the 1,650, she notched a winning time of 17:47.79, which was goo for third-best in team history.
Rademacher also clocked a Pioneer record with her 'B' cut, second-place time of 4:24.88 in the 400-yard individual medley. Meanwhile, in the 200-yard breaststroke, she finished third with a time of 2:19.25. In the preliminaries, she secured a 'B' cut time of 2:18.73, which was good for second-best all-time.
The final individual to add her name to the LIU Post record book was junior
Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden). Norrena took second in the 200-yard freestyle, behind Garriock, after slapping the pad at 1:54.95, solidifying her as the third-best time in school history.
As for the relay events, LIU Post rattled off gold and 'B' cuts in all five events, and an additional 'B' cut for the second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
Taking the top spot in the 400-yard medley relay was Pettersson, Garriock, Kwok, and
Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) with a time of 3:48.68. Following behind in second place with the fourth-best time in Pioneer history (3:52.56) was Jones, Rademacher, Soerensen, and Delehanty.
In the other medley relay, the 200-yard, Pettersson, Garriock, Kwok, and Delehanty teamed up for a finishing time of 1:44.41.
In the three freestyle relays, the Pioneers set new Top-5 times. In the 200-yard, Soerenesen, Brazier, Delehanty, and Pettersson finished with the fifth-best Pioneer time of 1:35.51. Garriock, Jones, Rademacher, and Kwok then grabbed the second-fastest 400-yard freestyle time in history (3:30.32).
Two LIU Post relay teams secured top-five times in the 800-yard freestyle. The first to finish – Garriock, Norrena, Hedberg, and Kwok – had the second-best time in history with an overall time of 7:39.67. Following them in third-place in the event and fifth in school history was
Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), Soerensen, Hill, and Rademacher. That squad managed a finishing time of 7:54.60.
The Pioneers will return after the holidays with a trip to East Stroudsburg, Pa. for a dual meet against East Stroudsburg on Jan. 14, 2014. The meet starts at 7 p.m.
