Women's Swimming Holds Commanding Lead After Day 2 Of Metropolitan Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 16, 2013) – With day two in the books at the Metropolitan Championships, the LIU Post women's swimming team holds first place with a commanding 914 points.  The College of New Jersey is in second with 752 points, and Southern Connecticut State University has moved into third place with 732 points.

In the two relay events of the day, the Pioneer squads took first place.  Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom), Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada), Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.), and Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) compiled the 200-yard medley relay team that set a new meet, conference and school record with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:44.14.  Setting a new meet and conference record with a 'B' cut time of 7:34.21 in the 800-yard freestyle relay was Soerensen, Kwok, Garriock, and Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden).

Along with taking part in the two Pioneer relay first place finishes, Garriock grabbed herself an individual win in the 200-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 1:51.99, making her a three-time conference champion in the event.  Also placing in the event was Norrena in 4th with a time of 1:55.85, Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) in 8th with a time of 1:57.30, Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) in 12th with a time of 1:59.04, and Katherine Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) in 16th with a time of 2:01.43.

Kwok took the individual victory in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new meet record and pool record at Rutgers that had been in place since 2005. She finished the event with an 'A' cut time of 53.95.  She edged out teammate Soerensen who took second place with a 'B' cut time of 56.01.  Finishing 8th in the event was Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) with a time of 59.60. 

Four Pioneers placed in the 100-yard backstroke event, with Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) grabbing the first place finish with a 'B' cut time of 55.95.  Coming in 4th and 5th places with five-hundredths of a second between them were Jones and Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), respectively.  Jones finished with a 'B' cut time of 57.31, edging out Brazier who finished with a time of 57.36.  Maxianne Russo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) finished with a time of 1:05.68, good for 24th.

The final two individual events on the day were the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.  Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) established a new team record with her second place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.02, and teammate Kirsty Elliott (Edinburgh, Scotland) took 12th place with a time of 4:46.57.  Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 5th place with a time of 1:06.89.

The Metropolitan Championships will be wrapped up on Sunday after another full day of events.\
