Baseball's Chenicek and Anderson Garner ECC Weekly Accolades
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2013) – Following the first week of play for the LIU Post baseball team in the 2013 season, two players received East Coast Conference recognition as senior hurler
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) was tabbed Co-Pitcher of the Week and freshman pitcher
Chris Anderson (West Islip, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week.
Chenicek hurled the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over Felician, tossing 7.2 innings of shutout, three-hit baseball while striking out seven. He issued only one walk and allowed only one extra-base hit as he kept the Golden Eagles off the board.
In his first collegiate start, Anderson turned in a solid effort against nationally and regionally ranked powerhouse Franklin Pierce. Anderson limited the Ravens to two hits and two earned runs through six innings, striking out three batters.
The Pioneers opened 2013 action in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and came away with a 1-3 record against a tough schedule that included two nationally-ranked teams in Southern N.H. and Franklin Pierce. The Pioneers opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Stonehill despite a strong effort from
Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.), who allowed two runs on two hits through seven, striking out nine batters. The Pioneers then held 2012 College World Series participant Southern N.H. to one earned run through six innings, but late-inning struggles saw the game unravel to a 10-1 loss. However, Chenicek tossed 7.2 strong innings and
Anthony Zapulla (Staten Island, N.Y.) closed out the victory for his first save of the year as the Pioneers defeated Felician 1-0. A strong start by Anderson against Franklin Pierce kept the Pioneers in the contest, but offensive struggles saw them fall 4-0 to the Ravens.
Up next on the slate for the Pioneers is a four-game weekend series against Southern Connecticut at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J.
