BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 21, 2013) – Sophomore hurler Joey Arena (Lakeland, N.Y.) took a tough loss despite a complete-game effort that saw him scatter six hits and allow only one earned run, but the Pioneers couldn't back him with any run support as they fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

LIU Post slips to 13-19 on the season and 5-9 in conference play, while St. Thomas Aquinas improves to 24-11overall and 13-5 in conference action.

The Spartans scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth inning off Arena, and although the Pioneers pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth as Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.), the hosts were unable to score the equalizer.  They threated in the ninth with two on and two out, but C.J. Ferriggi closed out the game with a strikeout to earn the save, making a winner of Robert Naughton who threw eight innings and scattered five hits.

Sophomore Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with two hits on the day.

The Spartans and Pioneers continue their series tomorrow, making up Saturday's postponed doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
