(April 6, 2013) – The Pioneers split a twin bill with Mercy College in an East Coast Conference matchup. LIU Post came out swinging in the first game, collecting 11 hits and scoring seven runs to top Mercy, 7-0. In the bottom of the third, senior Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) doubled down the right-field line, scoring Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) and Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.). Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) singled home Chenicek to put the Pioneers up 3-0. In the fifth, Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) tripled to right center, plating Corona and Chenicek. John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) then singled home Maccarone, giving LIU Post a 6-0 advantage. In the sixth, Chenicek drove in McKay (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases) for his third RBI of the afternoon, capping the scoring for the Pioneers. Sophomore pitcher Mike Eckerle (Hewlett, N.Y.) tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out 13 and walking one. Eckerle (1-1), now has a 0.79 ERA in six appearances (5 starts). In the second game of the afternoon, the Pioneers out-hit Mercy, 6-5, but failed to score as the Mavericks came away with a 1-0 win.
