Baseball Falls Victim to Late Adelphi Rally, Falls 5-4

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 9, 2013) –Adelphi University scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to cap a 5-4 comeback victory over the LIU Post baseball team on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.

The Pioneers fall to 11-14 on the season while Adelphi evens at 14-14-1 overall.

The visitors got on the board in the second inning as senior shortstop Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) led off with a single to the pitcher, followed by Anthony Corona's (Carmel, N.Y.) double to left that put runners in scoring position.  An infield error on Joey Arena's (Lakeland, N.Y.) scored Chenicek, and junior centerfielder Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) followed with a squeeze bunt that scored Corona.

Adelphi scored a run in the fourth as John Campbell drove in a run on a single to the shortstop.

The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the sixth, taking a 4-1 lead as Maccarone and David Groneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) each drove in runs. 

But the Panthers added a pair in the seventh on Chad Houghton's homer to right field, and with two outs and two on, Nick Zito stroked a single down the left field line to give the hosts a 5-4 lead.

The Pioneers put the tying run on second base with two outs in the ninth, but Dillon McNamara fanned the game's final batter to earn the save for AU.

Senior pitcher Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) tossed five innings, allowing only one run on eight hits, but Christian Stancavage (West Islip, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss as he tossed 0.2 innings in the eighth.

Ricky Van Allen got the win for the Panthers with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Junior second baseman Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.), Chenicek, and Corona each had two hits to the lead the Pioneers at the plate.

The Pioneers are off until Friday, when they take on Molloy College at 6 p.m., opening up a four-game weekend series between the two ECC rivals.
