HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Aug. 28, 2013) - The LIU Post women's lacrosse team, along with 10 other squads, will be competing in the fifth-annual Nicholas Colleluori Women's Classic. This one-day charity tournament is set to take place on Saturday, September 28 at Hofstra's James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

Teams participating in the tournament include: Hofstra, Adelphi, Catholic, Central Connecticut State, Iona, LIU Brooklyn, Manhattan, NYAC, Stony Brook and Villanova. The game schedule will be announced at a later date.

This event is the first of its kind in women's lacrosse to help raise awareness and funds to directly benefit the HEADstrong Foundation. All proceeds from the tournament will directly support the quality of life service offering provided by the organization to patients and families nationwide. In its history, the event has helped raise more than $200,000 for the cause.

The Pioneers, as well as the rest of the participating institutions, will wear Laces for Lymphoma to show their support for the cause. The LIU Post women's lacrosse team will also be selling awareness tee-shirts on campus to help contribute to the fundraising total.

A member from each participating team will be selected as the recipient of the Nicholas Colleluori Award. The honor is presented annually to a player on each team whose contributions both on and off the field are transforming the landscape of their represented program.

The HEADstrong Foundation's mission is to generate funds for blood cancer research. They distribute donations to survivors of blood cancer, and provide financial assistance to families that are experiencing the hardships of having a sick relative.
