Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins in Home-Opening Tri-Match

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2013) - The LIU Post volleyball team improved to 8-2 on the season, behind wins over Roberts Wesleyan and Shepherd, Saturday afternoon for its home opener at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
With the win over RWC, the Pioneers move to 1-0 in East Coast Conference play.
The hosts took game one in three sets over the ECC rival Redhawks (3-4) by scores of 27-25, 25-20, and 25-12. In the first set, junior
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) and senior
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) finished with four kills apiece, with Adams finishing with a .400 attack percentage. Junior
Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) tossed up a team-high 10 assists, and sophomore libero
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied seven kills.
In set two, freshman
Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.), along with RWC's Alexandre Tahauri, was the kill leader with six. Centro once again registered 10 assists and chalked up a set-high four digs long with McCool. The Pioneers took advantage of 10 Redhawk attack errors and six service aces in the third set to close out the game 3-0. LIU Post finished with just six kills, with three of them coming off the hand of McCool.
McCool finished with a match-high 12 kills on a .308 hitting clip, while Centro tossed up 25 assists and Ringor scooped up game-high 14 digs.
In Match Two, the Pioneers overtook Shepherd (3-6) 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, and 25-21. Adams was a perfect 6-of-6 on hitting, bringing her to a 1.000 attack percentage, and Namahoe chipped in with five kills. Centro had 14 assists in the set, and Ringor was once again the digs leader with six.
In set two, the visitors outdueled the green and gold to a 26-24 win behind a four-kill set from Melani Lewis. Namahoe matched Lewis's kill total of four, while Centro once again finished in double digits with 12 assists.
After dropping the second set, LIU Post bounced back to take the final two sets to finish the day 2-0. Namahoe finished the third set with a whopping eight kills and a .727 attack percentage, while freshman
Analise Austin (Honolulu, Hawaii) was the leader in the fourth and final set with five kills of her own.
Overall, Namahoe finished the contest with 20 kills and added 12 digs to register her third double-double of the season. Adams also finished in double digits with 13 kills. Centro tossed up a career-high 53 assists, and Ringor registered a game-high 25 digs.
Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
