McCool's 12 Kills Lead Volleyball To 3-1 Win Over Daemen

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2013) - With a 12-kill showing from freshman outside hitter Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.), the LIU Post volleyball team stormed to a 3-1 win against East Coast Conference foe Daemen Friday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
As a result, the Pioneers improved to 9-2 on the season, and 2-0 in ECC play, while the Wildcats drop to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The Wildcats out-battled the Pioneers to a 25-23 victory in the first set of play, behind six kills from junior middle blocker Ye Wang (Beijing, China). Neither team hit the ball particularly well with Daemen finishing the first set with a .182 attack percentage and LIU Post with .137.
That changed for the Pioneers in the second set, as they finished with a .464 hitting clip in the stanza, en route to a 25-15 triumph. Junior middle blocker Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) led the way with five kills on nine attempts for a .556 attack percentage, while McCool chipped in with four kills of her own. For the second-straight set, junior setter Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) finished with 10 assists.
In the third set, LIU Post held the Wildcat attack to a mere three kills, as the hosts picked up a 25-9 win to take a 2-1 match lead. McCool and senior middle blocker Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) registered three kills each to lead the set. The Pioneers outdid themselves in this set, finishing with a .571 hitting clip, while holding the visitors to a -.238 percentage. Centro and sophomore Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas) each tossed up five helpers in the set.
The green and gold shut the door on Daemen with a 25-17 score in the fourth and final set of the night. Once again, the Wildcats finished with an attack percentage below zero at -.059, while the Pioneers knocked down 12 kills to three errors for a .237 clip. McCool was once again the kill leader, this time with four, and Centro tossed up a set-high nine helpers.
Overall, McCool and Cricchi finished with double-digit kill totals at 12, and 10, respectively. Centro totaled 34 assists on the night, and senior middle blocker Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) scooped up a match-high 28 digs.
For the visitors, Wang recorded a match-best 13 kills.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Sept. 28), as they host American International at the Pratt Recreation Center at noon.
