Box Score
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 6, 2013) - The duo of freshman
Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.) and junior
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) led the LIU Post volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) in its 2013 season opener against Stonehill at the New Haven Tournament Friday in West Haven, Conn.
The Pioneers (1-0) opened the first set on an 11-4 run, capped off by a service ace from McCool. From that point on, both sides battled back-and-forth until sophomore Melissa Hansen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) knocked down the final kill off a set from junior Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy). McCool finished the opening set with five kills, and graduate Katie Hudencial (Mechanicsville, Va.) dug up a set-high six balls.
The second set was much of the same with the green and gold coming out on top once again. Two Skyhawk attack errors, along with kills by Adams and McCool, helped the Pioneers jump to a 4-1 lead. Both teams hung in the game with scoring going almost point-for-point. LIU Post knocked down three of the final four points with kills coming from seniors Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy), Geony Fisher (Goodyear, Ariz.), and Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii), all off assists from Centro.
A 5-0 run to open the third set helped the Pioneers to a 3-0 sweep. Stonehill held a 23-21 lead, until a timely LIU Post timeout led to the Pioneers closing out the game with four straight points with Cricchi throwing down a kill to secure the victory.
McCool led all players in the game with 13 kills in her first collegiate match, and Adams added 12 kills with an astounding attack percentage of .417. Centro tossed up a match-high 38 assists, and sophomore Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished with 15 digs.
For the Skyhawks (0-1), Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas) had a double-double with 11 of each kills and digs.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday (Sept. 6) at the UNH Tournament, as they take on the host Chargers at 10 a.m., followed by Wilmington at 1 p.m.
