Volleyball Jumps To 3-0 With Wins Over New Haven and Wilmington at UNH Tournament

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 7, 2013) - On Day Two of the New Haven Tournament, the LIU Post volleyball team secured a pair of 3-1 victories against the host Chargers and Wilmington, finishing off the weekend undefeated with a 3-0 record in West Haven, Conn.
Three Pioneers made their way onto the All-Invite Team after their play on the court over the two-day span. Seniors
Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) and
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) were two of the seven members, along with freshman
Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.), who was named MVP.
With the Pioneers' win in the first match versus the Chargers, the squad was able to end New Haven's winning streak of 28 consecutive triumphs over East Region competition and 19 in a row at Charger Gymnasium. LIU Post jumped out to a two-set lead, including a landslide win of 25-11 in the second stanza. New Haven was able to out-battle its oppositionn the third set, defeating the Pioneers, 25-18, but the green and gold bounced back with a 25-23 rout in the fourth and final set. Namahoe led all players on the court with 13 kills. She also added 14 digs to tally her first double-double of the season. McCool chipped in eight kills, four aces, two block assists, and seven digs. Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) tossed up 32 assists, one shy of the Chargers' Annika Hacker's helper total of 33.
Match two saw LIU Post dominating once again, winning the first two sets (25-18, 25-20,) before dropping set three (22-25), and then rebounding with the decisive set four victory (25-20). Four Pioneers – junior
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio), Namahoe, Cricchi, and McCool – finished with 10 kills apiece, while sophomore
Melissa Hansen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) tallied nine. Namahoe and McCool recorded 21, and 19 digs, respectively, giving them each a double-double. Sophomore
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) and graduate
Katie Hudencial (Mechanicsville, Va.) totaled 19 and 17 digs from the back row. Centro's 48 assists in the match were a career-high. Allison Briley of Wilmington knocked down a game-high 14 kills.
The Pioneers will hit the road once again for the California (Pa.) Tournament, set to be held Friday and Saturday (Sept. 13-14), where they will take on Davis & Elkins, the host Vulcans, Clarion, and Notre Dame (Ohio).
