AMHERST, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2014) - The LIU Post volleyball team wrapped up its visit to Western New York on Sunday with a 3-0 blanking of Daemen at Lumsden Gymnasium. Junior setter/outside hitter
Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas) allocated a match-high 25 assists in the win.
Tied 6-6 in the first set, in which the Pioneers (10-10, 5-3 ECC) hit .267, the green and gold scored nine of the next 13 points to take a 15-10 lead. Five different players registered kills in the burst for the visitors. From there, LIU Post cruised to the 25-16 victory, as Daemen (1-20, 1-7 ECC) only came as close as 16-13 the rest of the way. A ball-handling error by the Wildcats' Nicole Scherer (Buffalo, N.Y.) accounted for the game's clinching point.
In the second set, the two squads were again deadlocked at 6-all, until a 6-0 run gave the Pioneers all they would need, en route to the 25-15 triumph. Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker
Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) provided a kil and a block in the spurt. Amador added one of her seven kills on the afternoon. Similar to the opening game, LIU Post hit well, attacking at a .250 clip.
The third and eventual final set was the closest of the three. Trailing 11-3, the green and gold rallied back to even the game at 15-apiece with a 12-4 streak. Valenza led the comeback effort with five kills. Graduate libero/outside hitter
Katie Hudencial (Mechanicsville, Va.), senior middle blocker
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) and Amador also chipped in kills.
Later in the stanza, the Pioneers rode that momentum, and tallied the final two points of the set to win it, 25-23. Valenza and sophomore middle/right-side hitter
Analise Austin (Honolulu, Hawaii) slammed down back-to-back kills to put the match away.
Valenza paced all players in the contest with 10 kills. Adams totaled seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Austin collected six digs and five kills. Hudencial and junior libero
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) amassed 11, and 10 digs, respectively.
